Mombasa Steps Up Fight Against Mpox with 5,000 Vaccine Doses
Mombasa County has received 5,000 doses of the Mpox vaccine as part of its efforts to control the outbreak. The county accounts for about half of all reported infections in Kenya. It plans to launch a mass vaccination campaign in September, with the first phase targeting high-risk cases in Jomvu and Changamwe. As part of its initiative, it will conduct intensive public sensitisation training.
Since the outbreak in July 2024, the Ministry of Health has recorded 4,202 cases across 26 counties, with Meru County reporting its first case recently. The government has increased screenings at border points, including the Port of Mombasa and Busia. Rapid response teams have also been deployed to the affected counties. Warnings have been issued that the virus can be transmitted through close contact and presents with symptoms such as fever, rashes, and swollen lymph nodes.
