Moses Ledama Sunkuli
Acting Chief Executive Officer, IEBC Kenya
For most of his career, Moses Ledama Sunkuli has worked quietly behind the scenes in Kenya’s public institutions, and only recently did he come into the national spotlight. In February 2026, Sunkuli became Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, following Marjan Hussein Marjan’s departure. This new role put him at the heart of one of Kenya’s most closely watched institutions.
Sunkuli’s career began in education after training as a teacher and earning a Bachelor of Education from Moi University in 1998. He later added a Diploma in Business Management from the Kenya Institute of Management (KIM) and pursued an MBA in Strategic Management at Kenyatta University. He also completed specialised training in managing democratic elections in Africa at the University of South Africa. His academic achievements are supported by professional certifications, including CPA-K, CIA, CISA, and CPS-K, which demonstrate his strong background in finance, auditing, and governance.
In 2004, he founded Poroko Secondary School, which keeps him connected to grassroots community development. As his career progressed, he continued to support the school, demonstrating his lasting commitment to education and making a difference in the community.
Sunkuli gradually moved into public administration, gaining experience in governance, compliance, and institutional management, and eventually focusing on electoral operations. He joined the electoral commission after the 2010 Constitution, during a time of major institutional changes. He then moved up through the ranks, taking on senior roles in the Secretariat.
Before becoming Acting CEO, he had already worked through several election cycles, including the 2013, 2017, and 2022 general elections. He handled key areas such as voter registration, election logistics, and constituency-level operations, giving him practical experience in how elections work in Kenya.
His appointment in 2026 came at a sensitive time when the Commission faced scrutiny, especially about the accuracy and integrity of the voter register. Sunkuli quickly had to deal with political pressure, public expectations, and the need for reform. As Acting CEO, his job now goes beyond daily operations. He must restore trust, lead internal reforms, ensure the Commission adheres to the Constitution, and prepare for the important 2027 general election.
