On this International Women’s Day, as we celebrate the achievements of women worldwide, it is imperative to highlight the theme, “Invest in Women”. There is a Kiswahili saying that goes, “Mpiganaji kama simba, mwanamke ni nguvu isiyo na kifani” (like a lioness in battle, a woman is an unparalleled force), which portrays the transformative role women play in shaping a sustainable future.

Investing in women is not only an ethical imperative but also a strategic move towards economic prosperity. When women actively participate in different sectors, they bring diverse perspectives, innovative ideas, and unparalleled resilience. By providing equal opportunities in the workforce, we unlock the economic potential of half the population, leading to increased productivity and growth.

To empower women in every sector, we must first invest in their education. By ensuring access to quality education for girls and women, we lay the foundation for a skilled and knowledgeable workforce. Scholarships, mentorship programmes, and initiatives that encourage girls to pursue STEM fields will create a pipeline of talented women ready to contribute to various industries.

Empowering women to take on leadership roles is crucial for the sustainable development of any nation. By breaking down barriers that hinder women’s progression into leadership positions, we not only promote gender equality but also leverage the unique skills and perspectives that women bring to the table. Investment in leadership training programmes and mentorship can accelerate this positive change.

Kenyan women have shown remarkable entrepreneurship in various sectors. By investing in women-led businesses, we support job creation, innovation, and community development. Access to capital, business training, and mentorship programmes can empower women entrepreneurs to scale their ventures, contributing to a robust and sustainable economy.

As we strive for a sustainable future, women play a pivotal role in promoting environmental consciousness. Investing in green jobs and sustainable industries provides women with opportunities to contribute to environmental conservation efforts. This not only benefits the planet but also aligns with Kenya’s commitment to achieving sustainable development goals by 2030.

The health and well-being of women are also critical factors in building a sustainable future. Investments in healthcare infrastructure, maternal care, and family planning contribute to healthier communities. When women are healthy, they can actively participate in economic activities, education, and community development.

Investing in women necessitates a cultural shift. By challenging stereotypes and promoting inclusivity, we create an environment where women are encouraged to pursue careers in any field. Cultural transformation initiatives can contribute to a society that values and supports the diverse roles women play in shaping the future.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, let us recognise that investing in women is an investment in a sustainable future. By empowering women across every industry and sector, we not only ensure their success but also contribute to the overall well-being and prosperity of the nation. Together, let us commit to building a future where the potential of every Kenyan woman is realised, and all share the benefits.
