George Natembeya: Governor, Trans Nzoia County

Trans Nzoia County Governor George Natembeya recently came into the limelight following his publicised arrest on Monday, 19, 2025. He has been charged with two counts of conflict of interest and one count of unlawful acquisition of public property. He was freed on Tuesday on a bond of Sh1 million with an alternative bail of Sh500,000. However, Nairobi Anti-Corruption Principal Magistrate Charles Ondieki barred the governor from accessing his office for 60 days.
Natembeya assumed governorship of Trans Nzoia in October 2022 under the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K). He began his public service career as a personal assistant to the Minister for Security, the late John Michuki. He transitioned to serving as a district officer in Kilgoris and rose through the ranks. He served in various capacities, including District Commissioner for Murang’a and Kamukunji, County Commissioner for Isiolo and Narok, and Rift Valley’s Regional Commissioner from 2019 to 2022. He has been vocal about governance reforms and development, and has publicly expressed interest in vying for the presidency in future.
Born on February 4, 1971, in Trans Nzoia, the governor holds a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in anthropology from the University of Nairobi. He also has public administration training from the Kenya School of Government. He is married to Lillian Khaemba, and they have three children.
