Auditor-General Nancy Gathungu

Nancy Gathungu assumed office as Kenya’s Auditor-General on July 17, 2020. Serving an eight-year, non-renewable term, she is the second person to hold the position since the promulgation of the 2010 Constitution. Her primary mandate is to safeguard public funds and ensure financial accountability across government institutions.
Before serving in this capacity, Ms. Gathungu built a career in auditing and financial oversight. She served as the Director of Quality Assurance at SAI Kenya and previously as Chief Internal Auditor at Kenyatta National Hospital. She holds a Master of Business Administration (Strategic Management) and a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) from the University of Nairobi. She is also a Fellow of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (FCPA-K), a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), and an active mentor with Girls 4 Girls (G4G) Kenya. Additionally, she is a member of the Kenya Leadership and Integrity Forum and the Association of Women Accountants of Kenya (AWAK).
Since taking office, Ms. Gathungu has produced several audit reports highlighting financial irregularities in public spending. Her reports include an audit of the Kshs. 104 billion Social Health Authority system, outlining concerns over its implementation, and an assessment of the Hustler Fund, which raised questions about Kshs. 8 billion in non-performing loans.
Under Ms. Gathungu, so far, the Office of the Auditor-General (OAG) has:
- Submitted 2,531 audit reports to Parliament and County Assemblies.
- Supported 355 Parliamentary Committee sessions.
- Overseen the audit of Kshs. 2.7 trillion in government expenditure.
- Cleared a significant audit backlog.
- Developed a draft framework for tracking the implementation of audit recommendations.
As part of her tenure, the International Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI) honoured the OAG for pioneering the Performance Measurement Assessment Framework.
