Kenya  

2nd Anniversary: Gen-Z Protests  

Commemorations of the 25 June anti-Finance Bill protests were marked by police blockades on major roads, business disruptions, and mass arrests. Movement into and out of the capital was controlled by strict measures from authorities to restrict access to the CBD. According to the Minister for Interior, Kipchumba Murkomen, police arrested 355 people across the country. However, a state of normalcy resumed on Friday 26 June as businesses and transport returned to operation. 

 

Uganda  

PLU MPs Propose Bill to Have Parliament Elect Leader of the Opposition 

Two MPs affiliated with the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), Kibanda North MP Linos Ngompek and Buyaga West MP Denis Namara, have notified Parliament of their intention to introduce a Private Member’s Bill seeking to amend the Administration of Parliament Act. The proposed amendment aims to have the Leader of the Opposition elected by Parliament, replacing the current system in which the opposition party selects the leader of the party with the most seats in Parliament.

Tanzania  

Gov’t Unveils Six Strategic Road Projects Under PPP Framework  

Tanzania’s Minister for Works, Abdallah Ulega, has announced six strategic road projects to be developed through Public–Private Partnership (PPP) arrangements, with private investors invited to participate. Speaking in the National Assembly in Dodoma, he said TANROADS had already issued an official notice seeking investors and that advertisements were published on June 19, 2026, to begin the process. Ulega noted that one of the projects is the 260-kilometre Morogoro–Dodoma highway, which will be constructed as a four-lane road and serves as a key corridor linking Dar es Salaam and Dodoma.

Rwanda  

Rwanda Parliament Approves Rwf7.8T Budget for 2026/27  

Members of Parliament on June 24 approved Rwanda’s Rwf7.8 trillion budget for the 2026/27 fiscal year after the government redirected about Rwf400 billion from the Budget Framework Paper to priority sectors, including agriculture, social protection, support for vulnerable genocide survivors and feeder roads. The 23-article budget bill was unanimously adopted by all 63 lawmakers present in the Chamber of Deputies, with the changes following a review of government spending priorities and additional funding requests from institutions.

Ethiopia  

Federal Audit Reveals Billions in Uncollected Revenue and Unauthorised Spending 

The Office of the Federal Auditor General (OFAG) presented its 2024/25 fiscal year audit findings to lawmakers on June 18, 2026, covering 163 federal institutions, nearly 40 agencies and offices, as well as state-owned enterprises and public projects. The audit identified nearly Br7 billion in uncollected taxes and customs duties, and more than Br14 billion in unauthorised spending from 2023/24 that had not been returned to federal coffers. Parliamentary leaders called for stronger adherence to public financial management principles. At the same time, auditors reported that only 31 per cent of the 21.5 billion Birr in arrears from the 2023/24 fiscal year had been recovered.

Sudan    

Doctors Network Reports Over 215 Detainee Deaths at South Darfur Prison 

The Sudan Doctors Network said more than 215 civilians detained at the Daqrees prison in Nyala, South Darfur, died during May and June due to a lack of healthcare, mistreatment, torture and disease outbreaks. The group said humanitarian and medical organisations face severe restrictions in accessing detainees and raised concerns over the whereabouts of 31 detainees, including children, who were transferred to Nyala Hospital. It also cited unverified reports that members of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) extracted blood from some detainees, while noting that it could not independently confirm the claims.

Somalia  

Somalia Participates in Landmark EALA Budget Session  

Somalia’s nine-member delegation to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) participated in a landmark budget session in Arusha, Tanzania, where the regional parliament passed a supplementary appropriation bill for the 2025/26 financial year and received the East African Community (EAC) budget for FY 2026/27. The session marked a significant step in Somalia’s integration into the EAC, with Somali legislators taking part in decisions on the Community’s financial priorities and regional agenda. All nine Somali EALA members attended the session, underscoring the Federal Government’s commitment to engaging with regional institutions.
