Member of Parliament (MP) Gathoni Wamuchomba has established herself as one of Kenya’s most vocal and independent legislators, earning national attention for challenging party orthodoxy while championing grassroots development. Since 2022, she has served as MP for Githunguri Constituency, becoming the first woman elected to represent the constituency in the National Assembly of Kenya. Her leadership style, often marked by direct criticism of unpopular policies and strong engagement with her constituency, has made her a prominent figure within Kenya’s ruling coalition and in national politics.

Wamuchomba entered Parliament in 2017 after winning the Kiambu Woman Representative seat on a Jubilee Party ticket with more than 922,000 votes, one of the highest vote counts in the election. She later shifted to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ahead of the 2022 General Election and successfully contested the Githunguri parliamentary seat. In Parliament, she has served on influential committees dealing with agriculture, communication, transport, and parliamentary procedure, including serving as Vice-Chairperson of the Transport, Public Works and Housing Committee between 2017 and 2022.

Beyond politics, she is widely recognised for her long media career. Before joining elective politics, Wamuchomba became a household name in vernacular broadcasting through agricultural and breakfast programmes aired on Kameme FM and Inooro FM under Royal Media Services. Her popularity earned her the title “Queen of Vernacular Radio.” She served as Head of Radio Production at Royal Media Services between 2003 and 2006 after earlier working as Chief Producer and Radio Presenter at Regional Reach Ltd. She later transitioned into entrepreneurship and education, serving as Managing Director of Smart Media College from 2007 to 2017, and founded Utugi Television, a Kikuyu-language digital television station targeting farmers and rural audiences.

Her academic background reflects a strong interest in communication, governance, and social issues. Wamuchomba studied at the University of Nairobi, where she earned a Bachelor of Education (Arts) in 2000 and a Master of Arts in Communication in 2005. She later pursued studies in disaster management, environmental impact assessment, and doctoral studies in Women’s Studies.

Her contributions to public service and leadership have earned her several honours, including the Head of State Commendation (HSC) and selection for the Amujae Leaders programme under the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Presidential Centre for Women and Development in 2025. She is also affiliated with the Public Relations Society of Kenya and has served as a COMESA election observer and an environmental impact assessor.

Born on January 1, 1975, in Komothai Village, Githunguri, Wamuchomba rose from a difficult upbringing marked by economic hardship and family instability. She has often spoken about overcoming adversity in her childhood and early career, including working as an untrained teacher while pursuing her education. Her journey from vernacular radio to national leadership has become central to her public image as a resilient, grassroots-oriented politician.
