Karen Nyamu, UDA Nominated Senator
Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu has served in Kenya’s 13th Parliament since September 2022, following her nomination by the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party after the 2022 general elections.
At 37 years old in 2026 (born 1988), she is among the younger legislators in the Senate and remains one of the more publicly visible figures within the ruling coalition.
Recently, she drew attention for proposing an Artificial Intelligence Regulation Bill to establish legal and ethical safeguards for AI deployment, data protection, and algorithmic accountability in Kenya. The proposal reflects Parliament’s growing engagement with digital governance as the country approaches the 2027 election cycle.
Beyond her legislative work, Nyamu remains a prominent public figure, often engaging directly with constituents via social media and public forums. She represents a younger generation of Kenyan political actors navigating the intersection of law, digital culture, and coalition politics.
In September 2022, following the General Election, Nyamu was nominated to the Senate under the UDA party list. Since entering Parliament, she has contributed to legislative debates on governance accountability, youth empowerment, gender policy, and digital regulation.
Between 2017 and 2022, she stayed active in party mobilisation, youth outreach, and coalition politics, strengthening her alignment with UDA. Her political journey formally began in 2017, when she contested the Nairobi Women Representative seat during the General Election. Although she did not secure the position, the campaign significantly raised her national profile and marked her entry into competitive urban politics.
Nyamu was born and raised in Kenya and pursued her higher education at the University of Nairobi, where she earned a Bachelor of Laws (LLB). She later completed her Postgraduate Diploma in Law at the Kenya School of Law, qualifying as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya. Before fully transitioning into politics, she practised law in Nairobi, gaining experience in litigation and legal advisory work.
