Rostam Azizi
Tanzanian Businessman and Investor
Rostam Azizi is a Tanzanian billionaire industrialist and a prominent private investor in East Africa. In March 2026, he gained attention across the region when he acquired a controlling stake in Nation Media Group (NMG) from the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development. This move signalled a significant change in ownership for one of East Africa’s leading media companies. It positioned Azizi at the heart of shifting capital flows and media ownership within the East African Community.
Purchasing a majority stake in Nation Media Group, which owns over 20 brands, is one of Azizi’s largest regional investments to date. NMG, based in Kenya, manages major media brands across print, broadcast, and digital formats in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda. Azizi’s entry into media is seen as a way to diversify his business and could influence media ownership in the region.
Azizi began building his business empire in the 1990s, during Tanzania’s economic liberalisation. He is recognised as a co-founder of Vodacom Tanzania, where he helped establish one of the country’s largest telecom companies in 1999. By investing early in telecom infrastructure, he capitalised on the sector’s rapid growth and digital progress. Through his Caspian Group of Companies, he has expanded into energy, port logistics, agribusiness, real estate, and industry over the years, creating a diverse business presence across Tanzania and the surrounding region.
The investor has also been active in politics, having served as the Member of Parliament for Igunga Constituency with Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) from 1994 to 2011. During this period, he managed his political duties alongside his business interests before stepping away from politics to focus on expanding his investments.
The industrialist earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom. His education in business and finance helped guide his investments in telecommunications and infrastructure during Tanzania’s privatisation period. His business style has often been characterised by calculated, long-horizon investments in strategic sectors.
Azizi’s expanding footprint in Kenya’s business landscape demonstrates how capital is moving more openly across the East African Community. It also highlights the increasing role Tanzanian private investors are playing in the region. Azizi’s journey illustrates his long-term focus on investing in key sectors that influence the region’s economy and information networks.
