Governor Wamatangi’s Bank Accounts Frozen over Ksh.813M Graft Case

The High Court has issued orders to freeze bank accounts belonging to Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi, his wife, children, and ten other individuals over a Ksh.813 million corruption case.

The orders were issued following an application by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), which is investigating claims of corruption and unexplained wealth linked to the funds. The freeze will stay in place until the hearing and decision on the EACC’s application. The order adds to Wamatangi’s recent troubles, including the demolition of his business premises near Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi.

Bobi Wine Claims Ballot Stuffing, Arrest as Uganda Polls Underway

Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine has claimed widespread irregularities as voting commenced on Thursday, alleging that state agencies interfered with the electoral process and targeted members of his National Unity Platform (NUP). In a statement shared on X, Wine stated that the government shutdown of internet services on election day “prevents citizens and observers from seeing what is happening across the country.” He also alleged “massive ballot stuffing reported everywhere,” and mentioned that several NUP officials had been detained.

Rwanda’s High Commissioner to India, Jacqueline Mukangira, attended the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference on 11-12 January 2026 in the city of Rajkot. Mukangira highlighted the strong bilateral relations between Rwanda and India. Noting that India is Rwanda’s second-largest foreign investor and trading partner, the High Commissioner encouraged more Indian investments in sectors such as manufacturing, infrastructure, ICT, agriculture, mining, tourism, and healthcare.

Ethiopia Accuses Eritrea of Arming Rebels in Escalating War of Words

Ethiopian police announced they had confiscated thousands of rounds of ammunition sent by neighbouring Eritrea to rebels in the Amhara region, intensifying a feud between the longstanding adversaries that experts warn could lead to renewed conflict. Eritrea’s information minister did not immediately reply to a request for comment on the accusation. Asmara has previously denied interfering in Ethiopian affairs and accused Addis Ababa of aggression, with President Isaias Afwerki stating to state-run media this week that Ethiopia’s ruling party has declared war against Eritrea.

Discussions to Resolve Sudan Conflict Resume in Cairo as it Approaches Three Years

Sudan peace efforts resumed in Cairo on Wednesday with Egypt and the United Nations calling on warring parties to agree to a nationwide humanitarian truce, as the war between the army and its rival paramilitary nears the three-year mark. Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty told reporters that Egypt wouldn’t accept the collapse of Sudan or its institutions, or any attempt to undermine its unity or divide its territory, describing such scenarios as “red lines.” Abdelatty said during a joint news conference with Ramtane Lamamra, the U.N. secretary general’s personal envoy for Sudan, that Egypt won’t stand idly and won’t hesitate to take the necessary measures to help preserve Sudan’s unity.

Somalia, UAE Discuss Immediate Withdrawal of Emirati Forces and Assets from the Country

Somalia and the United Arab Emirates held formal coordination talks on 14 January to discuss the immediate and timely withdrawal of Emirati military personnel and assets from Somali territory, including Mogadishu, while evacuation arrangements related to the UAE facility in Bosaso remain unresolved, Dawan Africa learned. The meetings brought together a federal government committee and the UAE Ambassador in Mogadishu, followed by separate discussions with UAE military commanders stationed in the capital.
