Nyeri County Governor Mutahi Kahiga has found himself at the centre of public outrage after remarks he made at a funeral. Speaking in his native language, the governor made comments widely interpreted as inflammatory and disrespectful, sparking condemnation across the country. The statement, which appeared to touch on the sensitive topic of national unity, drew criticism from both political leaders and the public for its divisive tone.

The Council of Governors (CoG) quickly distanced itself from the remarks, describing them as careless and unnecessary. In response to the growing pressure, Governor Kahiga resigned from his position as Vice Chair of the Council of Governors, taking full responsibility for his remarks. He later issued a public apology, expressing regret and acknowledging the weight of his words. The National Cohesion and Integration Commission has since opened an investigation into the incident. Despite the controversy, Kahiga remains the Governor of Nyeri County, a position he has held since 2017.

The governor initially assumed office following the death of Governor Wahome Gakuru and was subsequently re-elected in the 2022 general elections under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA). Over the years, his administration has focused on improving education, agriculture, infrastructure, and access to basic services throughout the county.

Before entering active politics, he had a lengthy career in education. He trained as a teacher at Kisii Teachers Training College. He began a teaching career that spans over three decades, during which he also served as a headteacher for several years. The Governor was elected as the Executive Secretary of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) in Nyeri for seven years, becoming a voice for teachers throughout the county and the broader Central Kenya region. He holds a degree in Education from the University of Nairobi and a master’s in leadership and management from Kenya Methodist University. In 2024, he was awarded a Doctorate in the same field, further strengthening his strong background in education.

Governor Kahiga’s leadership is often described as firm and community-focused, emphasising local development and empowerment. However, the recent controversy has challenged his public image and increased scrutiny. How he handles this period will likely influence not only his political future but also the broader perception of leadership in Nyeri County.
