Finger on the pulse: DP Gachagua’s impeachment bid gains momentum
The push for Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment continues to gain momentum. On October 1, 2024, Parliament tabled an impeachment motion against the Deputy President, the first of its kind under the 2010 Constitution. Two hundred and ninety-one Members of Parliament (MPs) signed a petition calling for Gachagua’s impeachment.
They accused him of, among other things, gross violation of the Constitution; committing serious offences under sections 13 (1) (a) and 62 of the National Cohesion and Integration Act; committing offences under sections 45 (1), 46,47 (a) and 48 (1) of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act; and sections 2, 3, 4 and 7 of the Proceeds of Crime and Prevention of Money Laundering Act, which they said he would clearly enumerate when the House debates the motion.
Public participation across the country began on October 4, 2024. The Deputy President will then have an opportunity to appear before the House on October 8, 2024, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
