Sabina Chege, Kanini Kega MP slots in the balance as Uhuru goes after Jubilee rebels

Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta has signalled a purge against Jubilee Party rebels by ordering that they be removed from parliamentary committees just a day after succeeding in ousting nominated MP Sabina Chege as the National Assembly deputy minority whip.

The former ruling party also disclosed its plans to instigate the expulsion of Ms Chege and East African Legislative Assembly representative Kanini Kega from its ranks, with the aim of having them lose their positions in their respective assemblies.

Tanzania, Qatar commit to strengthen ties

Tanzanian Vice-President, Dr Philip Mpango, on Monday, held talks with the Ambassador of Qatar to Tanzania, Mr Fahad Rashid Al-Muraikhi, at the Chamwino State House in Dodoma, where they committed to strengthen ties between the two countries.

Dr Mpango said Tanzania will continue embracing the cooperation between the two nations for mutual lasting benefits. “We appreciate the cooperation that exists between our two friendly countries and indicate again our commitments to strengthen our cooperation even to greater height; I have looked at the trade numbers… there is significant improvement yes, but not enough,” Dr Mpango said.

Govt considering bailing out some distressed companies 

The government is considering to bail out a number of distressed companies, many of which are currently battling foreclosures.

The companies, some of which have already been debated at the Cabinet level, sources familiar with the discussions but declined to be named because they are not authorised to speak about the matter, said have been considered “too important to fail” at a time when the country is promoting the import substitution agenda.

Electoral commission sets date for by-elections to fill vacant local government positions

The National Electoral Commission (NEC) has embarked on elections to fill vacant positions in local government leadership from Village to District levels. The by-elections will start at the village level. The by-elections will start at the village level on Saturday, October 28. NEC Executive Secretary Charles Munyaneza on Wednesday, October 26, told The New Times that elections are needed for 13,165 positions in general and over 7,000 were vacant positions.

The positions to be filled include Cell Executive Committees and Councillors at Sector and District levels, as well as representatives of women, youth, and people with disabilities
