Gov’t Picks 10 Irrigation Schemes to Unlock Production, Markets

The government has identified 10 irrigation schemes for a pilot programme to increase agricultural production and open new markets for farmers. The schemes cover about 14,819 acres and involve a combined 52,115 farmers, who grow crops ranging from rice, maize and horticultural produce to vegetables, pulses, potatoes, onions and avocados. Irrigation Principal Secretary Ephantus Kimotho, who chaired a multi-agency meeting on Tuesday, said the initiative would address challenges that have limited the full potential of irrigation schemes, including post-harvest losses, poor market linkages, inadequate financing and fragmented production.

Court Dismisses Odonga Otto’s Bid to Remove Judge from Aruu Petition

The High Court at Patongo has dismissed former Aruu County MP Samuel Odonga Otto’s application for the judge’s recusal in his petition challenging the outcome of the January 15, 2026 parliamentary election. In a ruling delivered electronically on September 28, 2026, acting Judge Fatuma Nanziri Bwanika found that Otto had failed to demonstrate actual or apparent bias and ordered the petition to proceed before her. Otto, the petitioner in Election Petition No. 001 of 2026, filed the recusal application after the trial concluded, citing five grounds, including alleged bias, interference during cross-examination, procedural irregularities, courtroom conduct and alleged attempts to influence the court.

Tanzania, Burundi Begin Joint JPC to Review and Bolster Socio-Economic Ties

Tanzania and Burundi have begun the Seventh Meeting of the Joint Permanent Commission for Cooperation (JPC), which aims to review the implementation of bilateral cooperation agreements and to develop strategies to strengthen economic and social ties between the two countries. The two-day meeting, held in Bujumbura, Burundi, from 29–30 September 2026, is discussing strategic issues of mutual interest, including trade and investment, transport and infrastructure, agriculture, energy and electricity, minerals, defence and security, health, education, and science and technology.

Rwanda has demanded accountability for Kinshasa’s failure to fulfil its commitments under the Washington Accords, particularly neutralising the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) and ending cooperation between the militia and Congolese forces. Speaking at a United Nations Security Council briefing in New York on Tuesday, September 29, Rwanda’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Amb Martin Ngoga, said the country had taken steps to lift its defensive measures and reported them through the Washington mechanisms.

Sudan’s military leader, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, spoke by telephone on Tuesday with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, expressing support for Riyadh after a surge in attacks by Yemen’s Houthi movement, officials said. Cross-border strikes against Saudi targets have escalated this month following the Iran-aligned Houthis’ July announcement of what they called a maritime blockade on the kingdom, which they said included several drone and ballistic missile launches against Saudi territory and vessels.

Voting began on Wednesday in Galmudug and Hirshabelle, where residents are electing members of their state Houses of Representatives and local councils in combined one-person-one-vote elections run by the National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (NIEBC). Voters in the two states are electing members of their state Houses of Representatives and local councils through one-person-one-vote elections, the first such ballot in Hirshabelle and the second this year in Galmudug.
