President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and Raila Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) face crucial primaries this weekend ahead of the November 27 by-elections. These two main political parties’ nominations will test broad-based political arrangements as both aim to secure a majority of the 23 vacant seats and strengthen their position ahead of the 2027 general election.

On Saturday, UDA conducted primaries in Baringo County, Mlava, and several other wards. ODM, celebrating its 20th anniversary, is also dealing with internal tensions. The party’s national executive committee met in Nairobi on Thursday to assess readiness, but disputes in its Nyanza stronghold threaten to undermine unity.
