Tricky times ahead of the Covid vaccine

A story earlier in the week stating that private companies will be allowed to import and administer Covid-19 vaccines caused concerns online about the Government’s plans.

Coming as revelations rolled out of Parliament about the apparently shady procurement at the Kenya Medical Supplies Agency as the pandemic reached Kenya, the statement by the taskforce on the vaccines needed more context.

There is no real cause for alarm so far as all the plans in place involve the Government doing the work and there have been guarantees that the first vaccines will be either free or heavily subsidized.

The rollout of the Covid-19 vaccine is, however, a second chance for the Ministry of Health to prove that it can handle such a complex task without wading into economic crimes, and for the private sector to come out of it with clean hands.
