The National Assembly has gone on a long recess and will be resuming on May 26, 2025.
The High Court of Kenya delivered its ruling on the Tools for Humanity (Worldcoin) case on May 5, 2025. It declared that the collection, processing of data was unconstitutional. They held that Worldcoin failed to conduct a Data Protection Impact Assessment, failed to register as data processors and failed to obtain proper consent. The High Court prohibited the company from further processing the data and ordered the institution to delete the data it collected, under the supervision of the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner.
The deadline for compliance with the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations is today, May 5, 2025. These regulations require producers to take responsibility for the entire lifecycle of their products, including end-of-life management like recycling and disposal. Some analysts predict a 16 per cent increase in the cost of goods if NEMA proceeds with the enforcement, which stakeholders say is still unclear to them due to the ambiguity in determining the appropriate unit of measure. NEMA has indicated that it will use ‘standard packaging’ as the basis for calculating the levy, but this is open to wide interpretation.
2025 Conclave
Following Pope Francis’s unfortunate passing, the Vatican has confirmed that a papal conclave will begin on May 7 to choose his successor.
There will be a Water, Sanitation & Irrigation Conference held on 8th May 2025 at Radisson Blu, Nairobi Upperhill. The conference has been convened by the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation in partnership with the Nation Media Group. The event will have high-level conversations on Sustainable Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Management Solutions.
Managing Director, Mwananchi Communications Limited (MCL)
Ms. Mndolwa-Moria takes over from Victor A. Mushi, who has served as Acting Managing Director since September 2024. Before this appointment, Ms. Mndolwa-Moria served as the CEO of Inspire Ventures Ltd, a consultancy she founded. Before MCL, she had held several senior leadership roles at Vodacom Tanzania PLC, including Corporate Affairs Director and CEO of the Vodacom Tanzania Foundation, and at Maersk Line, where she led national sales, among others.
Ms. Mndolwa-Moria also serves as a Board Member at Assemble Insurance Tanzania, where she previously chaired the investment committee, and now chairs the remuneration and compensation committee.
She has previously served on Boards at the Government of Tanzania’s Marine Parks Reserves Unit and Railway Children Africa, demonstrating her commitment to community development and sustainability.
