This Monday, March 3rd 2025, Justice Ruth Njuguna will deliver a ruling on the bond application of former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu and contractor Charles Chege. Waititu faces 12 years behind bars or a hefty fine of Ksh 53 million. The pair argues that their appeal stands a strong chance of success. They have also pointed to their medical conditions and stressed their consistent attendance throughout the trial, demonstrating that they are not flight risks. Prosecuting counsel Victor Owiti insists that the two should continue to serve their sentences as they pursue their appeal. The court’s decision will shape the next chapter of this legal battle.

This month, Eastern African countries are set to publish draft regulations that will move the region closer to a regional electricity auction market. The 13-member Eastern Africa Power Pool (EAPP) is working on rules that will guide cross-border power trade, including the creation of a Day Ahead Market (DAM). This system will allow countries with surplus electricity to sell to those facing shortages at set prices, helping stabilise costs and reduce blackouts. The regional market is also expected to improve access to cleaner and cheaper electricity, cutting reliance on expensive and polluting backup power sources.
