Senate Speakers’ Roundtable
The sixth KEPSA-Senate Speaker’s Roundtable is scheduled to be held in Mombasa County between the 12th and the 13th of June 2024. The event will be held under the theme “Strengthening the Role of the Senate in Improving County Business Environment Competitiveness for the creation of wealth, jobs and inclusive prosperity in Kenya”.The Senate Speakers’ Roundtable is a high-level platform for public-private sector dialogue between the business community and the Senate that facilitates a joint review of the country’s policy and legislative environment, identifies crucial legislation for the private sector that needs to be reviewed or fast-tracked and addresses any gaps that require new legislative intervention based on the country’s and private sector development priorities.
Budget Statement Reading
The National Treasury will deliver the Budget Statement for the 2024–2025 financial year (FY) on June 13, 2024. Treasury Cabinet Secretary (CS) Njuguna Ndung’u in a notice stated that the budget statement will be submitted to parliament at 3 p.m. According to the National Assembly Budget and Appropriations Committee chairperson, Ndindi Nyoro, the government projects a Sh4.25 trillion budget for the 2024–25 fiscal year, an increase from Sh3.6 trillion in the previous FY ending June 30, 2024. In the Sh4.2 trillion budget, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), transport, housing, education, and security sectors are set to set the largest share in the 2024–2025 FY.
Senate Recess
The Senate will be on a one-month recess until Tuesday, 25th June 2024 at 2:30 pm.
June 12th Marks the date for the Hearing of the lawsuit filed by Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah, challenging the Finance Bill, 2024. The Bill is facing legal hurdles after Senator Omtatah moved to court to seek an injunction to prevent Parliament from proceeding with the Bill. The claim states that The National Assembly has tabled the Finance Bill 2024 prematurely before parliament considers and approves the Financial Year 2024/2025 budget estimates.
Contrary to the procedure laid out in the constitution, the National Assembly is considering the Finance Bill 2024 before it considers and approves the Appropriations Act, 2024. The Finance Bill 2024 is supposed to be based on the FY 2024/2025 budget estimates of revenue which were submitted to the National Assembly on April 30, 2024, by the CS Treasury.
World Environment Day 2024 is approaching on the 5th of June. This year’s theme emphasises the urgent need to address land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience. Nairobi County Environment Department has kicked off preparations for this year’s World Environment Day celebrations. The Campaign Promoting Restoration Activities in the City is led by the Director of Environment Mr. J.P Malawi.
Kenya is in top gear in its preparations for World Food Safety Day 2024. The commemoration will take place in a series of activities including a breakfast meeting for high-level government officials to garner their support in food safety initiatives. The celebrations will be weeklong, starting with market clean-ups, followed by a 3-day conference by way of panel discussions focusing on various thematic areas selected to demystify the theme ‘Food safety: Prepare for the unexpected.’ The climax will be on 7 June 2024 with a hybrid commemoration bringing together senior government officials, government agencies, private sector alliances and development partners.
Effective May 2024, Mr. Job Kihumba assumed the role of Board Chair at the Kenya Climate Innovation Center (KCIC). Currently an Executive Director at Standard Investment Bank, Mr. Kihumba brings extensive expertise in investment and finance management, corporate finance, institutional development, corporate governance, and leadership development. His professional interests also encompass environmental management, greenhouse gas emissions, and climate change adaptation and mitigation, areas in which he has led numerous workshops and seminars.
Mr. Kihumba’s distinguished career includes serving as the first CEO and Vice-Chairman of the Nairobi Securities Exchange and as the Founder and Chairman of the Centre for Governance. He is the current Chairman of both the Institute of Certified Investment and Financial Analysts and the College of Fellows of that Institute. Additionally, he was a founding member of the Institute of Directors, Kenya, and has chaired the Institute of Certified Public Secretaries of Kenya. His broad experience spans various corporate boards and institutions in both the public and private sectors. As a Commonwealth-certified trainer in corporate governance, he holds an MBA from Buckingham Management Center (UK) and a diploma in Management Science from the Kenya Institute of Management. Mr. Kihumba is also an active member of several professional associations.
Having been a KCIC board member for nine years, Mr. Kihumba will succeed Prof. Izael Pereira da Silva, who has served as Board Chair since the organization’s inception.
