The Senate is on recess until 14th July 2026.
Activist Bob Njagi is set to remain in police custody until 2nd July 2026 after the court granted investigators additional time to complete investigations into allegations that he used social media to incite the public ahead of the 25 June Gen Z memorial protests. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had sought a 14-day detention period, but the court allowed a seven-day extension and directed that two mobile phones recovered from Njagi be subjected to forensic examination. The matter has attracted significant public attention as it raises broader questions about the balance between freedom of expression, the use of social media during periods of public unrest, and the threshold for pre-charge detention in cases involving alleged incitement. Njagi is expected to reappear in court on 2nd July 2026, when investigators are expected to indicate whether they will prefer charges against him.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has announced that from 1 July 2026 it will begin inspecting motor vehicles at its inspection centres as part of enhanced road safety enforcement. School transport and commercial service vehicles will continue undergoing mandatory inspections, while owners of vehicles more than four years old will be required to book annual inspections through the eCitizen platform. However, NTSA clarified that enforcement of mandatory inspections for private motor vehicles, as well as new requirements for school buses and commercial vehicles under the 2026 regulations, will be announced separately. The Authority also emphasized that it has not licensed any private entities to conduct vehicle inspections and urged the public to use only official NTSA channels for inspection services.
