This May, the High Court will review a petition filed by former University of Nairobi (UoN) Council members who were abruptly removed from office by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba through Gazette Notice No. 4656 dated April 11, 2025. The court, led by Justice Lawrence Mugambi, issued interim conservatory orders stopping the revocation, warning of a governance crisis at UoN. The Council was about to appoint a new Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs when the Ministry intervened, allegedly to influence these critical decisions. The Petitioners argue that their removal was unlawful, lacked legal justification under the Universities Act, and was politically motivated. Their reassignment to other university councils for odd one-year terms further raised eyebrows. With the Council now below quorum, key decisions at UoN are stalled. The case will be mentioned before Justice Bahati Mwamuye for further directions, and the Education CS is expected to have filed his response by then.
