The Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes (Amendment) Bill, 2024

This week, the National Assembly will proceed with the Second Reading of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes (Amendment) Bill, National Assembly Bill No. 41 of 2024. The proposed legislation seeks to update Kenya’s legal framework on cybercrimes by introducing new provisions to address emerging threats in the digital space and enhance investigative powers. However, the amendments have drawn criticism from digital rights advocates and civil society groups, who argue that some of the proposed provisions could infringe on freedom of expression, enable excessive state surveillance, and be misused to target journalists, activists, and online dissent.

Gachagua’s Return

This Thursday, August 21, 2025, at 12:00 PM, Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader H.E. Rigathi Gachagua is scheduled to return to Kenya at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) after a U.S. tour that included meetings with diaspora communities and the launch of DCP satellite offices in several states. The party claims the government is plotting to arrest, intimidate, and possibly assassinate Gachagua upon arrival, alleging threats from Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki and Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen. The statement warns of possible flight diversion to Mombasa or Kisumu to prevent Gachagua from addressing supporters, calling such actions a “paranoid regime’s” ploy to silence dissent. The DCP accuses the state of a sustained pattern of violence against the opposition and urges massive turnout in Nairobi, Kisumu, and Mombasa to welcome Gachagua, framing the moment as a fight for Kenya’s sovereignty, justice, and democracy.
