Parliament reshuffles committees

The National Assembly will reconstitute at least 13 lapsed committees this week, while the Senate elects chairpersons for newly reformed committees. Legislators aligned to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua are expected to be removed from apex committees, including Budget and Appropriations, Finance and National Planning, Energy, and Lands. Legislators aligned with the broad-based government arrangement are likely to secure influential leadership positions in the reshuffle.

Public consultations for the Road Tolling Policy

The Ministry of Roads will begin public consultations on the Draft Road Tolling Policy 2025 on Monday 24th, February 2025. The controversial policy seeks to introduce tolling on major roads as a tax revenue-raising measure that will sustain road maintenance. The toll will be applicable on four types of roads: newly constructed, improved, those of higher quality than untolled roads and whether the government deems so in line with the law. The consultations will take place on varying dates all over the country.

The 5th Edition of the Nation Digital Summit will take place between Wednesday, 19th to Friday, 21st Feb, 2025, under the theme of ‘Transformative Innovations: Shaping Africa’s Future for Sustainable Prosperity’.Set to take place at Diani Reef Hotel in Ukunda, the event will gather  business leaders, policymakers, academia, and key stakeholders from across the continent.The summit will also offer insights from transformative enterprises that have scaled from SMEs to industry leaders by embracing a digital-ready culture.

Samer Abu Ltaif Appointed President of Microsoft EMEA

Samer Abu Ltaif has been appointed President of Microsoft Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA). Prior to this, he served as President for Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East, and Africa (CEMA), where he led strategic partnerships, expanded Microsoft’s regional presence, and enhanced value delivery to customers and partners across three continents.  

Based in the UAE, Mr.Abu Ltaif has held several senior leadership roles at Microsoft, including President for the Middle East and Africa and Regional Director for the Gulf region. He holds an MBA in Leadership and Sustainability and a degree in Computer Science Studies from the American University of Beirut.  

His leadership has been instrumental in Microsoft’s regional growth, including the launch of its first African data center in South Africa, as well as data centers in the UAE, Qatar, and Poland. He also spearheaded initiatives such as the Global Engineering Development Center in the UAE and planned data center expansions in Greece, Saudi Arabia, and Kenya. Additionally, he played a key role in establishing the Microsoft Africa Development Center in Kenya and overseeing Microsoft’s $1.5 billion investment in Abu Dhabi’s G42 to accelerate global AI innovation.

He succeeds Ralph Haupter who has moved to the role of President of the newly formed Microsoft Small, Medium Enterprises and Channel partner organization.
