The National Assembly and Senate will resume regular sittings on Tuesday, 17th September 2024 for the last stretch of sittings this year. Among the matters likely to feature in both Houses are the concerns surrounding proposal by the Adani Group to concession Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. The entry of Starlink into the Kenyan market and the concerns around it are also likely to feature. Both Houses are also likely to initiate inquiries into the fire at a school in Endarasha, Nyeri, that resulted in the deaths of 21 children.
All eyes are on Acting Inspector General of Police, Gilbert Masengeli, after the High Court sentenced him to six months in prison for contempt of court. Justice Lawrence Mugambi ordered Masengeli to surrender to the Commissioner General of Prisons. Masengeli was found guilty of ignoring court orders on seven occasions. Justice Mugambi had earlier summoned him to explain the disappearance of two brothers, Jamil and Aslam Longton, along with activist Bob Njagi, who were reportedly abducted by individuals posing as police officers.
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) is conducting an examination of the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) to identify systemic weaknesses and loopholes that may facilitate corruption and unethical practices. According to the EACC, the review aims to close gaps and eliminate opportunities that could be exploited for corrupt activities. The systems audit, launched by EACC Vice Chairperson Dr. Monica Muiru and KPLC Managing Director/CEO Eng. Joseph Siror, will focus on both technical and support functions at KPLC headquarters as well as selected regional offices and stations.

Hellen Mwariri Mathuka has been appointed Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer at Kenya Airways, a key move in the airline’s leadership overhaul. With KQ since 2009, she previously served as Chief Finance Officer. In her new role, Ms. Mathuka will oversee strategy, innovation, sustainability and network planning. Her expertise in audit, revenue management, and financial planning are expected to position her to lead KQ’s strategic turnaround plan, Project Kifaru 2.0. Her appointment coincides with KQ’s first half-year profit in a decade, reflecting her strong financial leadership.
