This week, the Senate will resume sittings on Tuesday, 12th November 2024. A key item to watch is Senator Cherarkey’s Constitutional Amendment Bill. In a decisive blow to proposed constitutional reforms, the Senate Committee on Justice, Legal Affairs, and Human Rights has recommended rejecting this controversial bill, which aims to extend elected officials’ terms from five to seven years. Despite the committee’s rejection, Sen. Cherarkey can still bring the bill to a Second Reading, provided he secures a seconder for the motion and rallies enough support from his fellow senators. Without sufficient backing, however, the bill will not advance and will effectively end at this stage.
