Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki has been unanimously elected as the new Vice Chairperson (VC) of the Council of Governors, succeeding Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga. The election occurred during a full council meeting in Naivasha, Nakuru County, and was confirmed by the Council Chairperson, Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi, in a press briefing. The position became vacant after Governor Kahiga stepped down on October 22 following widespread criticism of remarks he made about the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, which sparked national outrage and calls for his removal. Governor Njuki’s appointment has been welcomed as a move that fosters steady leadership and renewed stability within the council.

His national rise is built on a strong record at the county level. He is currently serving his second term as Governor of Tharaka Nithi County, a position he achieved through consistent work in governance, development, and community engagement. Before assuming the governorship, he represented Chuka Igamba Ngombe Constituency in the National Assembly from 2013 to 2017, where he served on the Public Investments Committee and the Departmental Committee on Energy, Communications, and Information.

As governor, he has overseen a wide range of development projects aimed at transforming the county. These include expanding access to clean water, improving roads and bridges, modernising the county referral hospital, building educational facilities, electrifying towns and villages, and implementing performance contracts to increase accountability among county officials. He has also strengthened partnerships with various national institutions to enhance service delivery and community empowerment.

Governor Njuki’s background combines academic achievement with professional development. His educational journey started at Chuka Boys for O level studies before he moved on to Lenana School for A level studies. He then attended Kenyatta University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Education with specialisations in Botany and Zoology. His interest in innovation prompted him to pursue a master’s degree in Entrepreneurship and Innovations Management at the University of Nairobi.

Before entering politics, he was a high school teacher in Kitui and later moved into the business world. He has worked with several telecommunications brands across Africa and played a key role in expanding Generations Electronics from a modest video library into a well-known enterprise. Beyond his administrative and business responsibilities, he has mentored young entrepreneurs and has a strong interest in outdoor sports, particularly rugby, which he has coached.
