Following the High Court’s judgment that the Azimio la Umoja Coalition is the majority party in Parliament, Hon. Millie Odhiambo wrote to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetangula, requesting him to recognise it as the majority party in the National Assembly. However, the Speaker declared Kenya Kwanza the majority side, and the Members of Parliament (MPs) stormed out of the chamber. They accused him of dictatorship and turning the House into a Court of Appeal to overturn the High Court’s decision.

Millie Odhiambo stated that it was not the Speaker’s place to overturn the High Court’s decision as a point of appeal. Wetangula has been a man under siege since becoming the Speaker of the National Assembly. Unlike his counterpart in the Senate, Amason Kingi, who resigned as party leader of his Pamoja African Alliance (PAA) to contest the Speaker’s seat, Wetang’ula refused to resign as leader of Ford Kenya. He has continued to lead a party that has six MPs in the House he oversees. The judges indicated that it is unlawful for Wetang’ula to hold a leadership position in Ford Kenya while also serving as Speaker of the National Assembly. This means he must either give up Ford Kenya’s leadership or the National Assembly. Before their walkout, Azimio la Umoja MPs vowed to move a motion for the impeachment of the Speaker.
