Significant Political Sentiment: The One Candidate Gamble: Can the Opposition Hold Together for 2027?

Earlier in the week, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i declared himself as the Gusii region spokesperson, with the United Opposition asserting it will support a single presidential candidate in 2027 to unseat President William Ruto, stating that national interest must come before individual ambitions.

Dr Matiang’i appears to be consolidating his support base, which has, over the years, voted for the late Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga. At the same time, he is positioning himself in the race for the opposition’s flagbearer slot in next year’s general elections.

The United Opposition coalition comprises Kalonzo Musyoka (leader of Wiper Party), Martha Karua (leader of People’s Liberation Party (PLP)), Eugene Wamalwa (leader of the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K)), Justin Muturi (leader of the Democratic Party (DP)), Dr Fred Matiang’i (Deputy Party leader – Jubilee Party), and Rigathi Gachagua (leader of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP)).

A few weeks ago, intense competition arose within the coalition over who would be chosen to challenge President Ruto. The dispute pitted supporters of Jubilee Party’s Deputy Leader and presidential aspirant, Dr Matiang’i, who insists that the nomination process must be transparent and involve the public, against backers of Kalonzo, who argued that he is the most suitable flagbearer for the opposition.

At a meeting between the Jubilee Party and the Party of National Unity (PNU), where the two formally announced a new political pact, Dr Matiang’i called for a transparent and credible presidential nomination process within the united opposition.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna of ODM’s Linda Mwananchi faction has also emphasised the importance of opposition unity, stressing that disunity could hand President Ruto a second term. Sifuna clarified that they recognise the challenge of confronting President Ruto, which is why unity among those opposing his regime is vital.

Additionally, former Chief Justice David Maraga is also advocating for a united opposition, stating that discussions among like-minded leaders are ongoing to consolidate support and mount a strong challenge against President Ruto. Maraga mentioned that consultations would be held to determine who among them is best placed to carry the opposition’s banner next year.

In recent political rallies, the United Opposition leaders have actively campaigned together while warning supporters against state intimidation and urging voters to register and mobilise. However, leadership ambitions and candidate selection are the big challenges.

Many Kenyans expect opposition unity, but a significant portion also doubts whether it will fully hold together through 2027.

However, competitive personal ambitions, internal party rifts, such as those within the ODM, negotiations over candidate selection, and political pressure from the government side all pose significant tests to that unity as the August 2027 general elections draw closer.
