Power Shift in Azimio: Sifuna Ousted, Kalonzo Takes the Helm
The Orange Democratic Movement has dismissed Secretary General Edwin Sifuna amidst ongoing internal factional disputes following the death of party leader Raila Odinga. The party has appointed Deputy Secretary General Catherine Omanyo as acting secretary general. The decision to remove Sifuna was made after a particularly heated National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Mombasa. Additionally, NEC chair and ODM party leader Oburu Odinga also decided to formally withdraw from the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition, accusing coalition partners of sidelining ODM in leadership decisions that appointed Kalonzo Musyoka as Azimio leader, with plans to ratify their exit on March 26 2026 at the National Delegates Convention.  Â

Sifuna and his allies opposed ODM’s rapprochement with President William Ruto’s UDA and launched a rival grassroots campaign, heightening internal tensions. Sifuna also questioned the legality of Oburu Oginga’s leadership and the source of funding for party activities, leading to accusations of indiscipline from party leaders. The NEC defended Sifuna’s removal as constitutional and warned against rebellion within the party. It also endorsed coalition talks with President Ruto, reaffirmed its reform agenda, called for compensation for human rights victims through the KNCHR, and advocated for the mandatory allocation of KSh450 billion to counties in the supplementary budget.Â
