Pope Francis passed away on April 21, 2025, after a papacy widely regarded as one of the most progressive in the history of the Catholic Church. Known for his humility and compassion, he described himself simply as “a sinner”. He acknowledged that he did not have all the answers—a statement many viewed as a powerful expression of humility. Pope Francis sought to shift the Church’s tone from judgment to mercy throughout his tenure.

While he did not endorse same-sex marriage, advocate for the ordination of women, or launch a liberal revolution within the Church, he consistently emphasised compassion and inclusion for all. His papacy marked a move away from the Church’s involvement in divisive culture wars over issues such as abortion and LGBTQ+ rights. He was the first pope to fully embrace social media, using platforms like Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) to spread messages of faith and hope. He also did not shy away from political matters, openly condemning the Israeli bombing of Palestinians in Gaza and denouncing President Donald Trump’s treatment of non-white immigrants.

In the final stages of his life, Pope Francis was hospitalised for 40 days in critical care due to acute bronchitis and pneumonia. Despite speculation that he might resign, he remained in office until his death. His funeral is scheduled for April 26, 2025. The Papal Conclave to elect his successor is expected to take place in the following two to three weeks.
