How Ruto Party Is Dealing With ODM’s ‘Blackmail’

President William Ruto faces a growing political balancing act as the UDA prepares for the 2027 elections, with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) demanding the Deputy President’s seat in any coalition deal. ODM interim leader Dr. Oburu Oginga insists his party will not settle for less than the second-highest office, a stance that has stirred tensions within Ruto’s camp. Leaders from Mt Kenya East, where Deputy President Kithure Kindiki hails from, have warned that replacing him would be “political suicide,” declaring the seat non-negotiable. With ODM asserting itself after Raila Odinga’s death and Ruto striving to hold together a fragile alliance, the president must now navigate competing regional demands while maintaining control of his coalition ahead of the polls.
