Kenya, Burundi Open Talks as Tensions Rise Over Foreign Traders 

Kenya and Burundi have opened talks to resolve tensions over the business activities of Burundian nationals in Kenya. The discussions come as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs warns against targeting or attacking Burundian or other foreign nationals. 

Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei said the two countries are moving closer to resolving the dispute. He added that the Government has extended the registration window for foreign nationals and businesses by a further 90 days. 

Sing’oei said Kenya would guarantee the safety of all foreign nationals and warned that attacks or targeting of foreigners would not be tolerated.

Uganda 

India Resumes Visa Services for Ugandans After Ebola-Free Declaration 

India has resumed visa services for Ugandan nationals following Uganda’s declaration as Ebola-free, Foreign Affairs Minister Adonia Ayebare announced. 

Ugandans can now apply for both e-Visas and regular visas to India, ending a suspension imposed during Uganda’s Ebola outbreak. Indian authorities will, however, retain public health measures for travellers arriving from Uganda, including self-declaration forms, thermal screening and health monitoring. 

Ayebare announced the decision on 9 September 2026, following diplomatic engagement between the two countries.

Tanzania 

Tanzania, Türkiye’s MÜSİAD Agree to Strengthen Economic Ties 

Tanzania and Türkiye are seeking to deepen cooperation in manufacturing, energy and minerals, infrastructure and construction, and tourism. 

Tanzanian Ambassador to Türkiye Iddi Seif Bakari and MÜSİAD President Burhan Özdemir agreed to strengthen investment and bilateral trade during talks in Istanbul on 8 September 2026. 

Bakari highlighted Tanzania’s access to regional and continental markets through the East African Community (EAC), the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which together provide access to a market of more than 1.4 billion people.

Rwanda 

Kagame Meets UNESCO Chief in Paris 

President Paul Kagame met UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany in Paris on 9 September to discuss Rwanda’s partnership with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). 

According to the Office of the President, the discussions covered education, science and technology, cultural heritage, and preserving the memory of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. 

Rwanda has two properties on UNESCO’s World Heritage List: Nyungwe National Park and the Genocide memorials of Nyamata, Murambi, Gisozi and Bisesero, inscribed in 2023.

Ethiopia 

Nile Basin CFA To Be Implemented Despite Egypt’s Refusal, Former Minister Says 

The Nile Basin Cooperative Framework Agreement (CFA) will be implemented despite Egypt’s refusal to sign it, former Minister of Water and Energy Alemayehu Tegenu said. 

The CFA, which entered into force after seven countries signed it, is intended to promote the fair, equitable, and cooperative use of Nile waters. It seeks to establish a modern framework based on shared benefits and reasonable utilisation, replacing what upstream countries regard as outdated colonial-era arrangements.

Sudan 

Sudan Army Chief, International Envoys Discuss Peace Efforts 

Sudan’s military leader, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has held talks with envoys from a five-member international mediation group on efforts to end the country’s civil war. 

The delegation includes representatives from the United Nations, the African Union, the European Union, the Arab League, and IGAD. It also met Prime Minister Kamil Idris and civilian committee members preparing for an internal dialogue. 

The diplomatic effort seeks to establish a credible political process to halt fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and support a return to civilian democratic rule.

Somalia 

Somalia Joins International Security Cooperation Forum in China 

Somalia’s Minister of Internal Security, H.E. Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail (Fartaag), attended the opening of the 2026 International Forum on Public Security Cooperation in Lianyungang, China. 

The forum brings together more than 2,100 participants from 139 countries, regions and international organisations to strengthen cooperation on cross-border security threats. 

Key discussions include terrorism and organised crime, cybercrime, drug-related crimes, migration security and the use of technology in public security.
