Nyamira Governor Survives as Senate Votes against Impeachment
Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo has avoided removal from office after the Senate upheld a preliminary objection, ruling that the county assembly failed to meet the legal requirements for impeaching a governor. Thirty-eight senators supported the objection, while only four opposed it, bringing the process to an end on procedural grounds. Senate Speaker Amason Kingi declared the proceedings terminated, noting that the impeachment could not proceed. Nyaribo’s lawyers informed the Senate that the assembly had fallen short of the constitutionally mandated two-thirds majority required to approve an impeachment. While presenting the motion on whether to uphold the objection, Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot also questioned whether the matter had been properly brought before the Senate at all.
