Missing in action: Trouble between CS and Kenya Kwanza government

Trouble continues to brew between Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi and the Kenya Kwanza (KK) government, as his absence from key events raises eyebrows. His no-show at the first Cabinet meeting of 2025, held at the State Lodge in Kakamega on Tuesday, further fuelled rumours of a rift. The meeting, chaired by President William Ruto, addressed a series of resolutions, including the merger of 42 state corporations into 20 as part of a cost-cutting initiative. While other Cabinet Secretaries were present, CS Muturi’s absence raised questions about his stance within the government.
The CS was also notably absent during the swearing-in of Public Service Commissioners at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), an event that drew attention due to his position in government. While CS Muturi explained that the Public Service Commission (PSC) is an independent body and that he is not a member, his absence led to speculation about his relationship with the government.
This follows Muturi’s public accusations against the National Intelligence Service (NIS), alleging that it was behind the abduction of his son last year. According to the CS, it took direct intervention from President Ruto to secure the release of his son from the NIS, further deepening the discord and criticism surrounding rising abductions in the country. This growing friction between Muturi and the KK government appears to be a cause for concern as the political landscape continues to shift.
