Governor Erick Mutai is currently undergoing ouster proceedings in the Senate. The removal is based on allegations of embezzlement, fictitious payments, and harassment of senior county staff. These charges were submitted to the Senate on 27 August 2025, after Governor Mutai’s lawyers’ application to have the matter dismissed was rejected by the Senate speaker.

In the County’s opening statement, the legal team depicted him as a corrupt governor overseeing a county administration plagued by financial mismanagement and abuse of office within less than three years of leadership. In his defence, Governor Mutai dismissed the allegations as a politically motivated witch hunt orchestrated by rivals in the County Assembly. He accused Speaker Dr. Patrick Mutai of harbouring ambitions for the governor’s office. His legal team also questioned the legality of the impeachment process, claiming that 18 of the 47 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) did not vote, falling short of the two-thirds threshold required. If the Senate upholds the charges, Mutai will join the list of governors who have been impeached, following the cases of Nairobi’s Mike Sonko, Kiambu’s Ferdinand Waititu, and Embu’s Martin Wambora, whose removal was later overturned by courts.
