Significant political event of the week:

On Sunday, July 10, Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja was officially gazetted as a governor’s seat candidate by the IEBC.  A case challenging his academic qualifications was also thrown out on Tuesday, July 12. Justice Anthony Mrima said petitioner Dennis Wahome failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that Sakaja’s degree certificate was fake.

Further, the court said the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) did not err in clearing Sakaja to run for Nairobi governor.

On Monday, July 11, Senator Sakaja of UDA faced off with his closest rival Polycarp Igathe of Jubilee in the Nairobi gubernatorial debate.

On Wednesday, July 13, the High Court cleared Mike Sonko to vie for the Mombasa governor’s seat. Electoral commission was ordered to accept the nomination of former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.  The court ruled that IEBC acted unreasonably to disqualify Sonko from the race and directed IEBC to gazette him.

On 13th July, the IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati and the CEO Marjan Marjan had a town hall with the media at the Bomas of Kenya. During the interview, the two were put to task over claims of a ploy to bungle the elections in favour of a particular candidate, the efficiency of the Kiems kits and alleged divisions within the commission among other issues.

Next upcoming significant event:
