Cleophas Malala is an award-winning playwright who scripted and directed Echoes of War, a controversial play that got the Butere Girls in trouble. The play depicts the struggle for the youth on civil liberties, including social justice and governance issues, which strongly resonates with Gen Z. It is set in the fictional Royal Velvet Emirates. This play has drawn striking parallels to the 2013 ban of Shackles of Doom.

In 2022, he vied for the governorship of Kakamega County but lost to Fernandez Barasa.

Malala, who served as Kakamega County’s senator for one term (2017-2021), is also the former Secretary General of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

In 2018, he was appointed Senate Deputy Minority Leader, but he was ousted in March 2021 and replaced by Kilifi Senator Stewart Madzayo.

The Friends School Kamusinga alumnus began his political career in 2013 when he was elected the Member of County Assembly (MCA) of Mahiakalo Ward in Kakamega County under the Amani National Congress (ANC) party
