Regional Lawyers Call Out President Ruto, Remind Kenya of EAC Obligations
The East Africa Law Society (EALS) has warned Kenya against discriminating against East African Community (EAC) citizens during its crackdown on foreign nationals engaged in small-scale trading and hawking. While acknowledging Kenya’s right to enforce immigration, licensing, tax and labour laws, EALS said action should be based on individual violations rather than nationality.
The lawyers warned that discriminatory enforcement could undermine the EAC Common Market, which provides for free movement and non-discrimination among partner states. EALS urged Kenya to clarify the legal basis and procedures for the crackdown and called on EAC institutions to engage with Kenya and affected Partner States.
