Ruto and Oburu Summon ODM-UDA Allied Governors and MPs to Plan for 2027 Polls 

President William Ruto and ODM leader Oburu Oginga have summoned governors, deputy governors and Members of Parliament aligned with the broad-based arrangement for a three-day retreat in Naivasha, as the two parties seek to strengthen their working relationship and prepare for the political contests ahead of the 2027 General Election. The high-level meeting comes as the Kenya Kwanza administration faces sustained attacks from the united opposition and the emerging Linda Mwananchi movement, both of which have intensified campaigns to deny Dr Ruto a second and final term.

Uganda 

Confirmed: Ugandan Troops Heading to Gaza for Peace Mission 

Parliament on Thursday approved the deployment of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) to the Gaza Strip following a heated and deeply divided debate. The motion, introduced unexpectedly during plenary by the Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Kiryowa Kiwanuka, triggered strong procedural objections from opposition legislators, who accused the government of ambushing Parliament. The deployment was presented under Section 38 of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces Act, which empowers the President to deploy UPDF troops outside Uganda for peace support operations, subject to parliamentary approval.

Tanzania has stepped up efforts to attract strategic investments from the Dangote Group as the government seeks to translate its Vision 2050 ambitions into tangible development projects. Planning and Investment Minister Prof. Kitila Mkumbo is leading a high-level Tanzanian delegation in Lagos for four days of strategic discussions with Dangote Group President Aliko Dangote to expand bilateral investment co-operation. The mission forms part of the government’s broader strategy to position the private sector as the primary driver of Tanzania’s economic transformation under Development Vision 2050, which aims to achieve a US$1 trillion economy by 2050.

Rwanda 

Gov’t Receives Nearly 180 Asylum Seekers Evacuated from Libya 

A total of 177 asylum seekers evacuated from Libya arrived in Rwanda on Wednesday, 5 August, under the Emergency Transit Mechanism (ETM), according to the Ministry in Charge of Emergency Management (MINEMA). The latest arrival brings the number of refugees and asylum seekers received by Rwanda under the ETM since September 2019 to more than 3,000. The group comprises 68 Sudanese, 66 Eritreans, 26 South Sudanese, 15 Ethiopians and two Somalis. They were received in partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and will be accommodated at Gashora Emergency Transit Centre in Bugesera District.

Gov’t Cracks Down on Corrupt Officials and Business Owners 

The Government of Ethiopia is taking decisive measures against individuals, organisations and networks accused of undermining the ongoing macroeconomic reforms through corruption, illegal economic activities and the misuse of national resources. Briefing the media, Government Communication Service Minister Enatalem Melese said the government had taken action against actors engaged in economic sabotage, including activities that contributed to foreign currency shortages, inflationary pressures, contraband trade and artificial shortages of essential goods. The Minister added that Ethiopia has recorded significant development gains through sustained efforts despite various domestic and global challenges.

US Senator Calls for Halt to UAE Arms Sales over Sudan War 

A senior US lawmaker has called on the administration to pause arms sales to the United Arab Emirates, citing its continued support for a Sudanese paramilitary group accused of genocide. Senator Chris Van Hollen, speaking after a classified briefing on Capitol Hill, said the United States must leverage its weapons transfers to compel Abu Dhabi to stop backing the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The RSF remains locked in a devastating conflict with the Sudanese army, creating what international observers describe as one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.

The Deputy Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Salah Ahmed Jama, on Tuesday launched the World Food Programme (WFP) Somalia Country Strategic Plan 2026–2030 and attended the screening of a documentary highlighting the humanitarian challenges facing communities across the country. The strategy focuses on strengthening food security in both rural and urban communities, promoting self-reliance among populations affected by drought, climate change and conflict, while supporting long-term resilience and sustainable livelihoods.
