Michael Mutiga, CEO, Stanbic Bank Kenya
Michael Mutiga has been appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Stanbic Bank Kenya, effective 1 August 2026, subject to regulatory approvals. He succeeds Abraham Ongenge, who has served as Acting CEO since March 2026 and will return to his substantive role as Head of Private and Personal Banking.
Mutiga joins Stanbic from Safaricom Plc, where he has served as Chief Business Development and Strategy Officer since May 2022. In that role, he led the company’s transformation agenda, overseeing strategic partnerships, mergers and acquisitions, funding strategy, asset optimisation and business growth as Safaricom expanded its digital financial services business.
The appointment marks Mutiga’s return to mainstream banking after four years in the telecommunications sector. It comes as Kenyan banks increasingly compete for leaders with expertise in digital finance and platform-driven growth.
A lawyer by training, he holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB Hons) from the University of Nairobi and a Master of Laws (LLM) from Temple University. He began his banking career at Barclays before spending about 15 years at Citibank, where he rose through senior local and regional positions to become Managing Director and Head of Corporate Finance for Sub-Saharan Africa, based in Johannesburg.
Across a career spanning more than two decades in banking, telecommunications and digital financial services, Mutiga has received several industry accolades, including multiple Corporate Banker of the Year awards.
