Building Regional Security: Justified Accord 2026 Underlines Kenya-Tanzania Partnership

Security and military cooperation between Kenya and Tanzania has taken centre stage with the rollout of Exercise Justified Accord 2026, the largest annual multinational drill led by the United States Africa Command in East Africa. Running from February 23 to March 13, the exercise spans Kenya, Tanzania and Djibouti, but Nairobi and Dar es Salaam are emerging as key anchors of the regional effort.
For Kenya, which remains on the frontline of counterterrorism efforts against al-Shabaab and broader instability in the Horn of Africa, the exercise boosts operational readiness. It improves coordination with regional and international partners. It also strengthens Kenya’s role as a strategic security hub in East Africa, given its experience in joint operations and peace support missions. Tanzania’s participation highlights its growing security diplomacy and commitment to collective defence in the region. As maritime security and cross-border threats develop, Tanzania benefits from interoperability training and intelligence collaboration that enhance its capacity to protect coastal and inland corridors vital to trade and regional integration.
With approximately 1,500 personnel involved, the exercise is not merely symbolic. It deepens military-to-military ties, sharpens crisis response capabilities, and institutionalises cooperation between Kenya and Tanzania within a broader multinational framework. In doing so, Justified Accord 2026 advances both countries’ shared interest in stability, resilience and coordinated responses to emerging security risks in East Africa.
