Non Executive Director Representing KQ Lenders Company 2017 Limited
On January 26, 2026, Kenya Airways Plc announced the re-appointment of Ms Esther Jepkemboi Koimett CBS as a Non-Executive Director. This return to the KQ board comes after a hiatus since 2022. The KQ Lenders Company 2017 Limited represents local and international lenders who extended financing to Kenya Airways during earlier restructuring efforts, particularly as the airline struggled with mounting losses, fleet financing obligations and operational disruptions exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic. The lenders emerged as a critical stakeholder bloc following the restructuring, joining the Government of Kenya and strategic partner KLM in steering the airline’s turnaround.
Ms Esther Jepkemboi Koimett CBS is the daughter of the late Hon. Nicholas Biwott. She pursued her higher education at the University of Nairobi, earning a Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) degree followed by a Master of Business Administration (MBA).
Her professional journey began in the 1980s, with early roles building toward senior positions in government and finance. She served as Managing Director and CEO of Kenya Post Office Savings Bank, now Postbank and held key roles in privatization and public enterprise reform initiatives. In the 2010s, she became Investment Secretary at the Ministry of Finance and National Treasury (also known as Director-General for Public Investments and Portfolio Management), overseeing state corporations, government shareholding, and major public investments. In January 2020, former President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed her Principal Secretary for the State Department of Broadcasting and Telecommunications in the Ministry of ICT, Innovation and Youth Affairs, where she managed infrastructure, aviation policy, and regulatory matters.
Koimett has maintained a strong boardroom presence throughout her career. She previously served as a Non-Executive Director at Safaricom Plc, Telkom Kenya Ltd., and Kenya Airways Plc from April 2018 until her retirement from the board in July 2022. She has also chaired M-PESA Holdings Co Ltd and AAR Insurance Kenya, while serving as a Non-Executive Director at the African Trade Insurance Agency and, more recently, joining the board of Car and General.
