Despite being on recess, the National Assembly Departmental Committees on Finance and National Planning and on Public Debt and Privatisation will be receiving comments on Sessional Paper No. 3 of 2025, which proposes the partial divestiture of government shares in Safaricom Plc.This is a proposal to divest 15 per cent of government’s 35 per cent stake in Safaricom. The deadline for submitting comments is Thursday 8 January 2026. Both Houses adjourned for their long end of year recess on Thursday 4 December 2025 and will remain on break through the festive season before resuming plenary sittings on Tuesday 10 February 2026.
A Kenyan man implicated in trafficking Kenyans to Russia will have his case mentioned in court this Wednesday under a fresh charge sheet that now specifically includes allegations he trafficked people to Russia to serve in the war. Edward Kamau Gituku is accused of coordinating a network that lured Kenyan job seekers with promises of lucrative overseas work in Russia before allegedly sending them on to join Russian military units. This followed a raid in Athi River where detectives found more than 20 Kenyans purportedly awaiting processing for travel. Authorities claim many were misled into paying hefty sums for visas, travel, accommodation and other logistics as part of the scheme.
The National Treasury has officially invited Kenyans, businesses and other stakeholders to submit their views and proposals on tax policy changes that should be considered in the Finance Bill for the 2026 / 2027 budget. This call is part of the preparation for the national budget and is meant to encourage wider public participation in shaping tax laws and revenue measures before they are finalised. Submissions are expected to inform how revenue-raising measures will be structured to support the government’s economic agenda, including the Bottom‑Up Economic Transformation Agenda. The deadline for sending in proposals has been set for December 31, 2025.
The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) will hold a validation workshop this Wednesday, starting at 9:00 a.m. This follows submissions on Telecommunications Market Structure under Unified Licensing Framework (ULF) from stakeholders and the general public. The Authority has prepared responses to the submissions received and published the same on the website. In a special issue of the Kenya Gazette dated 10th December 2025, President William Samoei Ruto conferred the prestigious rank of Senior Counsel on 55 advocates in recognition of their exemplary service and contribution to the rule of law.
Among the prominent lawyers elevated are Safaricom Plc Board Chairperson Adil Khawaja, Elisha Ongoya, known for his work in impeachment proceedings, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Kenya’s first Data Protection Commissioner Immaculate Kassait, former President of the Law Society of Kenya Eric Theuri Njiru and renowned lawyer Muthomi Thankolu. The move, under the Advocates Act, elevates these legal professionals to the highest echelon of the profession, granting them precedence and privileges in the High Court.
