President Ruto returns from China with billions in mega project pledges

President William Ruto is set to return from Beijing, China, with billion-dollar economic opportunities aimed at expanding Kenya’s development. During the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), President Xi Jinping pledged $50 billion (KSh 6.5 trillion) in financial support to Africa over the next three years, focusing on industrialisation, agriculture, trade, and investment.

Tanzania

FOCAC Summit: Tanzania eager for innovations

Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan declared Tanzania’s readiness to showcase China-Africa socio-economic innovations.

President Samia made the commitment while addressing the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit yesterday. Representing the Eastern Africa Region, Dr Samia highlighted the deepening partnership between China and Africa, which has significantly boosted trade and investment in recent years.

In her speech, the President commended China for its unwavering commitment to the promises made at the 8th FOCAC Ministerial Conference, particularly the Nine Programmes.

World Bank, French Development Agency give Uganda aid of over KSh 2 trillion

The government and World Bank said on Thursday that Uganda has received more than $600 million (over KSh 2.2 trillion) from the French Development Agency (AFD) to fund infrastructure development and manage waste in the capital, Kampala.

Rwanda

Rwanda to host 2025 international prisons conference

Rwanda will host the 27th International Corrections and Prisons Association (ICPA) Annual General Meeting and Conference, set to take place from October 26-31, 2025.

The announcement was made during the 26th ICPA Conference in Singapore, which was held from September 1st to 6th. Evariste Murenzi, Commissioner General of the Rwanda Correctional Service (RCS), and his delegation attended the event.

Ex-Spy Chief Fahad Yasin dumps Farmaajo as speculation rife over his next political move

Politician Fahad Yasin has cut his 10-year political ties with his former boss, ex-President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed Farmaajo.

The former National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) Chief and National Security Advisor who managed Farmaajo’s campaign that led him to Villa Somalia confirmed on Sunday that he had called it quits with the former Somalia Head of State.

Ethiopia

Ethiopian Airlines stops flights to Eritrea

Ethiopian Airlines said on Tuesday it had suspended flights to neighbouring Eritrea because its bank account there was frozen.

The carrier’s CEO, Mesfin Tasew, said at a news conference that the Eritrean Civil Aviation Authority had blocked money transfers from Ethiopian Airlines’ bank account in the Eritrean capital city of Asmara.

South Sudan

South Sudan awaits key decision on elections as political tensions rise

South Sudanese state officials face uncertainty as President Salva Kiir deliberates on whether to hold elections in December, as previously planned, or extend the transitional government to allow more time for preparations. This week, President Kiir has been in Nairobi, meeting with negotiators to draft a roadmap that could eventually lead to a new constitution.

However, back in South Sudan, his ministers are increasingly uneasy due to recent dismissals, such as the sacking of Bangasi Joseph, the former Minister for Presidential Affairs.
