FINANCE COMMITTEE TO TABLE FINANCE BILL, 2024 REPORT

Tomorrow, the Finance Committee of the National Assembly will table the report on the Finance Bill, 2024, before Parliament. The committee, chaired by Hon. Kuria Kimani, completed public hearings and consultations with various government agencies to gather perspectives on the Bill’s proposals.

SOCIAL HEALTH INSURANCE FUND REGISTRATION COMMENCES

The government is set to roll out mass registration of Kenyans to the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) starting July 1, 2024. The Ministry of Health will lead the mass registration exercise commencing across all 47 counties and on all platforms. SHIF aims to provide holistic healthcare for all Kenyans by expanding coverage and reducing costs. The new system aims to ensure equity and access to healthcare services by covering individuals previously left out by the National Health Insurance Fund

THE BLUEINVEST AFRICA FORUM

BlueInvest Africa is an event initiated by the European Commission, taking place on 3-4 July in Kenya. The conference aims to facilitate meetings between African entrepreneurs seeking financing and international investors scouting for opportunities, all centered around projects capable of propelling Africa’s blue economy forward.

For 2024, the focus is on spotlighting transformative projects within maritime and coastal sectors, as well as interior waters, with an emphasis on sustainable innovation, job creation, and marine ecosystem preservation. The event provides a platform for African-based companies and global investors to forge strategic alliances, exchange knowledge, and elevate the blue economy to unprecedented heights.

Overall, BlueInvest Africa 2024 offers a comprehensive platform for learning, collaboration, and growth, making it an invaluable event for anyone interested in the sustainable blue economy.

 

WORLD KISWAHILI DAY

Kenya is gearing up to host the 2024 World Kiswahili Day from July 5 to 7, with President William Ruto as the chief guest. Events include “Usiku wa Mswahili” and the main celebration on July 7 in Mombasa. A National Organising Committee is in place, along with a proposal for a National Swahili-Speaking Day. This follows Kenya’s selection as host during last year’s East African Community celebrations in Uganda. Similarly, progress on establishing a National Kiswahili Council is underway.

Ms. Gathoga-Mwangi

Standard Group Board of Directors has named Ms Marion Gathoga-Mwangi as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). This appointment became effective July 15, 2024. Ms Mwangi takes over the reins of Standard Group from her predecessor Joe Munene who has held the position on interim since July 6, 2023.

Ms. Gathoga-Mwangi is an accomplished Senior Executive with over 26 years of local and international experience in Commercial, Operations Excellence and General Management in multiple sectors.

Gathoga-Mwangi’s illustrious career includes pivotal executive roles at The Linde Group PLC companies, such as African Oxygen Pty (AFROX) and BOC Kenya PLC. Her notable contributions include enhancing access to medical gases across Africa and managing bulk and onsite manufacturing operations in South Africa.

Taking the helm from interim CEO Joe Munene, who has held the position since July 6, 2023, Gathoga-Mwangi steps into her new role with an extensive background in Commercial, Operations Excellence, and General Management across multiple sectors. Her appointment is expected to drive forward The Standard Group’s strategic objectives and growth initiatives.

Before joining The Standard Group, Gathoga-Mwangi held several key positions at The Linde Group PLC, a leading global industrial gases and engineering solutions company listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Her roles included Healthcare Director, Business Unit Director for Bulk and Onsite Manufacturing in South Africa, and Managing Director of BOC Kenya PLC.

In addition to her executive roles, Gathoga-Mwangi contributes to the corporate world as a Non-Executive Director at BAT Kenya PLC, BOC Kenya PLC, and the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM). Her academic credentials include a Bachelor of Science (Honors) Degree in International Business Administration from the United States International University (USIU) Kenya, and she is a recognized practitioner of Continuous Improvement (Kaizen), a methodology she has effectively utilized in corporate turnarounds.

Gathoga-Mwangi also serves as a part-time Academic Director of the Women in Leadership programme at Strathmore Business School (SBS), where she mentors the next generation of leaders. Her leadership prowess is further evidenced by her role as Vice Chair of Women in Manufacturing (WIM) in Kenya and her memberships in Women Corporate Directors (WCD), Women on Boards Network (WoBN), and the Institute of Directors of South Africa (IODSA).
