Dr. Matiang’i was appointed acting CS for Interior and Coordination of National Government on 7th July 2017 following the demise of Joseph Ole Nkaissery. He took up the full post in January of 2018 in President Kenyatta’s second term.

On 22nd January 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta, via the Executive Order Number 1 of 2019, appointed Matiangi as the Chairperson of the National Development Implementation and the Communication Cabinet Committee – essentially making him de facto “Chief Minister”. The Board is composed of all Cabinet Secretaries, The Attorney-General and the Head of the Public Service who acts as the secretary.

Dr. Matiang’i has held other Ministerial positions. He was first appointed as Cabinet Secretary of ICT. He was then reshuffled and appointed Cabinet Secretary for Education, Science and Technology. During his term, he spearheaded the review of the curriculum for basic education leading to the adoption of the current Competency Based Curriculum.

Before joining the Government, Dr. Matiang’i held various Research and Programme implementation positions with various local and international organizations. He consulted for the World Bank, the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the United Nations Development Programme, among others. He was a governance and program implementation expert and the immediate former Country Director of the Kenya Parliamentary Support Programme. He was last working as the Eastern Africa Regional Representative for the Centre for International Development, Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy, the State University of New York before he joining Government as the Cabinet Secretary for Information Communication and Technology. Dr Matiang’i also taught in University of Nairobi and Egerton University.

Dr. Matiangi’s education includes a Ph.D. in communication and comparative literature from the University of Nairobi, an M.A. in English from the University of Nairobi, and a B.A. in education from Kenyatta University. He speaks Swahili, English, and has a working knowledge of French.
